Cycling Around Peterborough

Peterborough has a wealth of bicycle paths, going from urban to countryside and back in a matter of minutes. There are many guides and maps to give you inspiration, coaches if you need to learn or polish your skills, and cycle hires if you want to try it out.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

Cycling is an excellent, low-impact physical activity that is good for your health
You can cycle with friends or by yourself
You get to see more of the landscape than by walking, and more closely than by car

‘Learning to cycle has made me a very happy person. A ladies cycle group in Central Park was formed to encourage more women to learn how to cycle. Since then a year on, I’ve enjoyed going to the surrounding villages on the outskirts of Peterborough. I can now also enjoy this love for cycling with my ten year old daughter and husband. It makes me truly very happy.’

You can get a free adult cycle lesson through Travelchoice – just fill in their form here.

Travelchoice also has designed a series of leisure route guides which highlight scenic cycle routes that explore some of Peterborough’s wonderful countryside and many attractions, including the villages of Castor, Marholm, Etton, Helpston, Werrington and Farcet. Most of the routes are on quiet lanes or off-road tracks. The guides are available free of charge from all locations which stock “Your Cycle Map” however maps of the routes can be downloaded electronically here.

Let’s Ride – a website by British Cycling – offers fun, free bike rides for people of all abilities. There are pages to find local women’s only rides, mixed groups, guided rides, and how to teach your children to ride.

The Peterborough Green Wheel contains a perimeter route and ‘spokes’ out from the city centre. It uses a mixture of traffic-free paths, quiet roads and urban cycle lanes. It enables cyclists to enjoy lovely attractions such as Ferry Meadows Country Park or Peterborough Cathedral.

Nene Park Cycle Hire. Choose from mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, children’s bikes, child seats and trailers or why not try out a tandem or even an electric bike!
