Headway Cambridgeshire works with families where there has been a brain injury, regardless of the cause. Because brain injury affects every family differently, they provide assessment and support plans tailored to the needs of the individual and the family.

Emily introduces us to the Headway Hub in Peterborough:

Brain injuries are hidden disabilities that can have dramatic impacts on the lives of not only the people they affect, but also their families. These injuries can by due to a stroke, an infection, or a trauma caused by a fall, a road traffic accident, assault or any other cause.

Anyone can refer and Headway’s support is not time limited. They provide day services, individual and group work, vocational support and outdoor therapies and gardening. They have a supported exercise programme from seated exercise and mindfulness through to groups in the gym.

Services that are free of charge include:

  • Information and advice
  • Assessment (in the Hub or in the home)
  • Supported exercise groups
  • Fatigue management
  • Getting Ahead – Building Resilience programme

Services that have a cost include:

  • Day Services
  • Memory Groups (when they are part of a Day Service; some stand-alone ones are free)
  • One-to-one work in the home (unless in receipt of Adult Social Care)
